In September, all first- and second-level managers at GFT Italia, a branch of the German multinational information technology company, were involved in a multimedia skills enhancement course for human capital development, organized by Fabio Bertolini, HR director, with Stra-Le.
GFT chose to invest in the most important resource any organization possesses: people. To do so, it turned to Stra-Le, which, through innovative and digital ways, engaged managers in a highly experiential training contest.
At the heart of the project is a game, but not just any game: SQUARE, the new online Business Game of Stra-Le conception dedicated to HR issues.
GFT managers, divided into 12 competing teams, made all the most important decisions on the strategic levers of human resource management and development of a virtual enterprise with SQUARE business simulation.
After an initial opening meeting in the classroom, the challenge was ignited and continued online. Over the course of a month, teams in direct connection with Stra-Le’s coaches discussed the hottest topics to reach the finish line before others.
The business game was not the only playing field, however: the teams also faced each other on the level of in-depth activities designed especially for them and usable remotely on Academy Stra-Le, accumulating more valuable points for the race, which was getting fiercer day by day.
The in-depth activities were offered in an innovative, digital and engaging way: the result was newsletters and interactive training pills, a forum in which to stimulate discussion from some of the in-depth readings and, finally, cases to be solved online in teams.
The competition mechanism, combined with the strategic and innovative approach of the course, proved successful, and the engagement of managers reached an astonishing level, despite the fact that the period was very challenging for business.

The impact on the participants was evident: the desire to win the competition soon gave way to the desire to discover and learn more about such hot and important topics for those who manage employees with rare and complex skills (such as those of software developers) in a dynamic and competitive business environment, every day.
The course increased managers’ commitment with respect to people development and triggered a series of actions, both at the individual and team level, aimed at employee growth and motivation.
But in the end who won? The race could only end with an award ceremony: surprisingly, all participants were awarded prizes to reiterate the victory of the entire organization in understanding the importance of people and their development.
